Got diagnosed with hypothyroidism and I’m also prediabetic. Any tips would help!

Hi there,

I’m 27F and I have thyroid issues for years. I gained so much weight over the past few years and I just got diagnosed with hypothyroidism. On top of that I have high levels of cholesterol and I’m prediabetic.

I’m super bummed because I have been watching over what I eat and exercise regularly. I home cooked my food, put veggies in my meal, I add more protein, and treats are just an occasional thing. I don’t even drink sugary drinks, just homemade fruit smoothies with protein powder.

Please can anyone who may be having same conditions as me give advice on what needs to be improved in my meals? What needs to be added/restricted etc. what are your meal plans like would help! I’m frankly clueless because I feel like I was already on the right path. But I don’t want my prediabetic condition to go any further.

EDIT: thank you all so much for the advice and tips! I unfortunately cannot reply to everyone but please know I appreciate your comment :) to clear things up I haven’t seen an endocrinologist, the diagnosis was from my PCP who did my blood work but I’m about to after I get a referral. Years ago I was actually experiencing hyperthyroidism and it’s been under remission for years so I didn’t get it checked until I start putting on weight and have difficulties losing weight. Due to my past hyperthyroidism experience I’ve been avoiding iodine, but now I know I actually need it in my diet. Thanks again!
